The Government must reduce cost of food by cultivating 4000 acres per Local Government – Abayomi Odunowo

In today’s world, unemployment and food scarcity are two of the most pressing issues that many countries, including Nigeria, are facing. It is imperative to come up with innovative and sustainable strategies that can help tackle both problems simultaneously. One such strategy is to cultivate 1000 acres of the four basic food consumed in Nigeria – rice, beans, maize, and cassava – in each of the 774 Local Government Areas of the country at the same time.

By implementing this strategy, we can create over three million Agriprenuers and cultivate 1,238,400 hectares of farmland across Nigeria. This would not only increase food production but also significantly reduce unemployment in the country. Each Agriprenuer would be responsible for cultivating one acre of any of the four staple foods – rice, beans, maize, or cassava. The government would purchase the agricultural products directly from the farmers, ensuring that they receive a fair price for their hard work.

The key to the success of this strategy lies in its ability to create a massive network of small-scale farmers who are empowered to contribute to food security and economic growth in their local communities. By providing support, training, and resources to these farmers, we can help them increase their productivity and improve the quality of their crops. As a result, the cost of food would decrease, making essential food items more affordable for consumers.

Furthermore, by setting a minimum expected yield and quality for each farmer, we can ensure that the products meet the necessary standards for consumption. This would not only benefit consumers but also help boost the economy by increasing the supply of food within the country.

The cultivation of 1000 acres of each of the staple foods in every Local Government Area is a bold and ambitious initiative that requires the collaboration of the government, private sector, and local communities. By working together, we can create a sustainable and scalable model that can be replicated across the country, thereby transforming the agricultural sector and contributing to economic development.

The first step in implementing this strategy is to provide training and support to the farmers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to cultivate their crops effectively. This could involve workshops, seminars, and access to agricultural specialists who can provide guidance and expertise.

Additionally, the government can provide financial assistance to the farmers in the form of low-interest loans, grants, or subsidies to help them purchase necessary inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and equipment. By investing in the agricultural sector, the government can stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty in rural communities.

Furthermore, the government can facilitate the distribution and marketing of the agricultural products, ensuring that they reach consumers efficiently. By establishing partnerships with wholesalers, retailers, and other stakeholders, the government can help farmers access broader markets and earn higher profits from their produce.

In conclusion, cultivating 1000 acres of the four basic food consumed in Nigeria simultaneously in each Local Government Area has the potential to increase food production, reduce unemployment, and stimulate economic growth. By empowering small-scale farmers to become Agriprenuers, we can create a network of entrepreneurs who are dedicated to producing high-quality, affordable food for their communities. This strategy has the potential to transform the agricultural sector and contribute to the overall development of the country. With the right support and investment, this initiative can lead to a more sustainable and prosperous future for Nigeria.
