The upcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo State scheduled for November 16, 2024, is already generating a lot of excitement and interest among political aspirants in the state. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state is especially abuzz with activity as more and more aspirants throw their hats into the ring, eager to secure the party’s ticket for the coveted position of governor.

One of the stand-out aspirants in the APC is the incumbent Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who assumed office following the untimely demise of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Aiyedatiwa’s position as the current governor gives him an advantage and an edge over the other aspirants, as he has already been in the public eye and has had the opportunity to make a tangible impact in the state.

Another prominent aspirant is former Commissioner for Finance, Mr Wale Akinterinwa, who has garnered a significant amount of popularity and support within the APC across all 18 local government areas of the state. His strong standing within the party makes him a formidable contender for the party’s ticket, especially if the indirect primary system is adopted, and delegates from various local government areas have the power to determine the party’s flagbearer.

Indeed, the growing list of aspirants in the APC is a testament to the robust and vibrant democracy at play within the party, as various individuals seek to demonstrate their capabilities and put forth their visions for the future of Ondo State. Among these aspirants are former member of the House of Representatives, Mr Mayowa Akinfolarin; former Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Oladunni Odu (the sole female aspirant); former Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Prof Francis Faduyile; former APC aspirant, Chief Olusola Oke; and Mr Gbenga Edema, among others.

Akinfolarin, for instance, has been vocal about the need for a leader who can bridge the gap between the government and the people, and he believes that he is the right person for the job. Similarly, Akinterinwa, with his widespread popularity and enthusiastic support from party members, is positioning himself as a strong contender for the party’s ticket.

The recent dissolution of the Ondo State Executive Council by Governor Aiyedatiwa also saw a demonstration of Akinterinwa’s popularity, as he was warmly received by a large crowd of party supporters at the Akure Airport, who sang and chanted his name in a show of solidarity and endorsement. This display of support is a clear indication of the strong backing that Akinterinwa has within the party, which could potentially work in his favor as the gubernatorial race heats up.

As the clock ticks closer to the November 16 election, the political landscape in Ondo State is rife with anticipation and fervor as aspirants jostle for the APC ticket and gear up for what promises to be a hotly contested gubernatorial race. The enthusiasm and energy surrounding the upcoming election is a reflection of the democratic spirit and the desire for progress and development within the state.

In conclusion, the 27th of January 2024 marks a significant moment in Ondo State’s political landscape, as aspirants in the ruling All Progressives Congress and other parties prepare for the forthcoming gubernatorial election. With a wide array of aspirants vying for the APC ticket, the stage is set for a dynamic and spirited contest that will ultimately determine the future leadership of the state.
