As a leading youth-focused organization in Ogun State, AATSG Ogun State fully supports the State House of Assembly in requesting Governor Dapo Abiodun to appoint a Commissioner for Youth in the state. This appointment is crucial in ensuring that young people under the age of 40 have a sense of belonging and representation in the state government. The National Youth Council of Nigeria has emphasized the importance of having a youth commissioner who is under 40 years old to ensure that the voice of the younger citizens is heard and their needs are addressed effectively.

One of the primary reasons why AATSG Ogun State supports the appointment of a youth commissioner is to inspire and motivate young people in the state. By appointing a popular figure such as the Big Brother Naija winner Laycon as a youth ambassador, the government can engage and empower the youth in meaningful ways. This will not only give young people a role model to look up to but also demonstrate that the government values their contribution to society.

Furthermore, a dedicated youth commissioner can focus on implementing youth-centric initiatives and policies that cater to the unique needs of young people. This can include facilitating educational support, capacity building, job creation, sports, and social welfare programs that directly benefit the youth population in Ogun State. By prioritizing youth development, the government can ensure that young people have access to opportunities that enable them to reach their full potential and contribute positively to society.

Additionally, having a youth commissioner in Ogun State will provide a platform for young people to voice their challenges and advocate for their interests. Issues such as high unemployment rates, lack of access to quality education, and limited opportunities for youth development can be addressed more effectively with a dedicated youth representative in the government. The youth commissioner can serve as a bridge between the government and the youth community, ensuring that their concerns are heard and addressed in policy decisions.

In light of recent incidents of cult clashes and violence among young people in Ogun State, the appointment of a youth commissioner is more important than ever. AATSG Ogun State is concerned about the impact of these senseless killings on the state’s reputation and the safety of its residents. By driving policies and programs that engage young people and address the root causes of violence, the youth commissioner can play a crucial role in promoting peace and security in the state.

Moreover, the youth commissioner can also promote youth leadership and mentorship by appointing young, skilled, and innovative individuals to key advisory roles in the government. This will not only groom future youth leaders but also ensure that young people have a seat at the table when it comes to making decisions that affect their lives.

The appointment of a youth commissioner in Ogun State has the potential to bring about positive change for young people in the state. By giving young people a stronger voice, more opportunities, and targeted support from the government, the youth commissioner can help address the unique needs and concerns of the youth population. AATSG Ogun State fully supports this initiative and looks forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on young people in Ogun State.
