Breaking news: The third year of Government now set for performance and a victory of democracy and benefit of our Renewed Hope Agenda

The National Assembly of Nigeria has made a historic decision by granting full financial and administrative autonomy to all 774 local council authorities across the country. This monumental change comes as a significant step towards strengthening democracy and local governance in Nigeria. The amendment to section 124 of the constitution marks a transformative shift, empowering the local governments as a full third tier of government independent of undue interference from state governments.

The move to grant autonomy to the local government is a major victory for decentralization and grassroots development. For too long, the local councils have been subject to the whims and fancies of state governments, impeding their ability to effectively address the needs of their communities. With this newfound autonomy, the local governments will be able to have greater control over their affairs, leading to improved service delivery and development initiatives at the grassroots level.

One of the key provisions of this amendment is the creation of the Office of Auditor General of the Local Government as well as the State Local Government Service Commission. This signifies a commitment to transparency and accountability within the local government system, ensuring that public funds are utilized efficiently and ethically. The establishment of these oversight bodies will help to curb corruption and mismanagement, fostering a culture of good governance within the local government sector.

Another notable change is the removal of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) from the constitution, transferring the powers to conduct council elections to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This decision aims to enhance the credibility and fairness of local government elections, reducing the influence of state governments in the electoral process. By entrusting INEC with the responsibility of conducting these elections, there is hope for greater transparency and integrity in the democratic process at the local level.

In addition, the National Assembly has also paved the way for Independent Candidacy in future elections by amending sections 65 and 106 of the constitution. This progressive step opens the door for individuals without party affiliation to contest elections, promoting inclusivity and diversity in the political arena. With Independent Candidacy, aspiring leaders will have the opportunity to present their vision and agenda to the electorate, without the constraints of party politics.

While this groundbreaking decision is a cause for celebration, there are still challenges ahead in implementing these constitutional amendments. The newly ammended document will need to be sent to State Houses of Assembly for approval, demonstrating the importance of collaborative action at both the federal and state levels. It is imperative that all stakeholders work together to ensure the effective implementation of these changes, in order to realize the full potential of local government autonomy in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the issue of the immunity clause for the President and Governors has been a topic of debate within the National Assembly. While the Senate has affirmed the retention of the immunity clause, rejecting the House of Representatives’ proposal to remove it, this remains a contentious issue. The immunity clause has been a subject of scrutiny, with concerns over its potential for impunity and lack of accountability for public officials. It is essential for robust discourse and deliberation to continue regarding this matter, in order to arrive at a consensus that best serves the interests of the Nigerian people.

In conclusion, the National Assembly’s decision to grant full autonomy to the local governments of Nigeria is a momentous milestone in the country’s democratic evolution. This transformative shift holds the promise of advancing local governance, promoting transparency and accountability, and enhancing the democratic process at the grassroots level. With the support and commitment of all stakeholders, these constitutional amendments have the potential to usher in an era of greater self-governance and development for Nigeria’s local communities.
