The unending security challenges in Nigeria needs to be resolved now so we can achieve economic prosperity – Odunowo

The unending security challenges of Nigeria have been a major hindrance to the country’s economic prosperity. The current centralized security architecture has proven to be unreliable in achieving the needed results, leading to high casualties and widespread insecurity in many local communities across the country. It is imperative that these security challenges be addressed and resolved now in order for Nigeria to achieve economic prosperity.

The first step in addressing the security challenges in Nigeria is to restructure the security architecture. The current centralized system has proved to be ineffective in dealing with the diverse and widespread security threats faced by the country. It is essential to look at other countries’ security architectures, such as the United States, for a case study. The decentralization of security forces, such as the police, navy, Air Force, Nigerian army, and Civil Defence, is crucial in addressing the security challenges. State policing and community policing should be introduced, with independence and latitude to operate as required in various areas, without needing approval from central locations. This would provide a better and faster way of resolving the security challenges, thus improving effectiveness.

The failure of the centralized system in addressing the security challenges in Nigeria has been evident in the high casualties and widespread insecurity across the country. This failure mirrors that of the United States during the Vietnam War, where the centralized approach proved ineffective in dealing with the independent community and state forces of the Vietnamese. It is therefore vital that a new approach is adopted to address the security challenges in Nigeria. The commander in chief should give stern instructions to all heads of the security units, stating that they will be relieved of their jobs if positive results are not seen in the next 30 days. Additionally, the necessary equipment and logistics support must be provided to them in a timely manner to enable them to carry out their assignments effectively.

Another aspect that needs to be addressed in sorting out the security challenges of Nigeria is the need for intelligence gathering and sharing. There should be a coordinated effort among the security agencies to gather and share intelligence. This would enable a more proactive approach in identifying and neutralizing security threats before they escalate. The establishment of a joint task force for intelligence gathering and sharing, comprising representatives from various security agencies, would significantly improve the effectiveness of security operations.

The issue of corruption within the security agencies also needs to be tackled. Corruption within the security agencies not only leads to inefficiency but also erodes public trust and confidence. Therefore, a strict anti-corruption stance must be adopted within the security agencies, with stringent measures put in place to deal with any officer found to be engaging in corrupt practices. Additionally, the welfare of the security personnel should be prioritized, as this would boost morale and overall effectiveness in addressing the security challenges.

In conclusion, the unending security challenges of Nigeria need to be sorted out now in order for the country to achieve economic prosperity. Restructuring the security architecture, decentralizing security forces, intelligence gathering and sharing, tackling corruption, and prioritizing the welfare of security personnel are crucial steps in addressing the security challenges. It is only through concerted and effective measures that Nigeria can finally overcome its security challenges and pave the way for economic prosperity.
