We concerned citizens of Nigeria have always said that we Nigerians are responsible for our difficulties as we make things difficult for ourselves out of our selfish and greedy reasons. And it seems that this unfortunate pattern has reared its ugly head once again, this time in the form of a troubling issue with the implementation of a government policy on 50% transport fees.
The administration had introduced a very good policy aimed at easing the financial burden of transportation on the citizens. However, this policy has been unjustly thwarted by transport companies like GIGM, who have failed to pass on the benefits of the policy to their customers. Many of their customers have reported that they were denied the 50% discount, with the company citing the excuse that the federal government had not paid them for previous rebates.
One particular case that highlights the severity of this issue is that of a hardworking youth corps member who was serving in Anambra and had to travel to Abuja to spend the holidays with his parents. Mr. Micheal Adegbola had purchased a ticket from Awka park to Utako in Abuja, paying a total of N28,600 on the 23rd of December 2023. Despite the clear provisions of the 50% discount policy, he, along with the other passengers on that trip, was not given the discount and was, in effect, shortchanged by the transport company.
This is unacceptable. The federal government’s intention to alleviate the financial burden of transportation for the citizens must not be frustrated by the selfish and unjust actions of transport companies. It is imperative that the affected individuals receive the refunds they are owed, and that GIGM and other companies that have similarly violated the policy face the consequences of their actions.
The brazen disregard for government policies and the exploitation of hardworking citizens for personal gain cannot be allowed to continue. It is a clear indication of the greed and self-interest that have contributed to the difficulties faced by Nigerians. If we continue to allow such behavior to go unpunished, we are only perpetuating the cycle of hardship and injustice that plagues our society.
We must hold these companies accountable for their actions and demand that they adhere to the government’s policies without exception. The welfare of the citizens should always be the top priority, and any entity that seeks to undermine this principle must be made to answer for their actions.
We call on the appropriate authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly and ensure that justice is served. The affected individuals deserve to have their money refunded, and the transport companies involved must face the full repercussions of their actions. Only then can we hope to create a society where fairness and integrity prevail, and where the interests of the people are truly protected. It is time for us to stand up and demand accountability, for the betterment of our nation.
